It’s the second Friday of the Fringe Barcelona Festival 2025, when the Secret Comedy Club turns into a French wine cellar as multi-award-winning British comedian Alexis Dubus, aka Marcel Lucont, takes his audience on a thrilling journey — his new comedy special “Whine List.”
Prior to the start, the audience is invited to submit a short online form consisting of three questions: “What is your worst workday experience?” “What is your worst experience abroad?” and “What is your worst amorous experience?” The room is already filled with anticipation and giggles. Some people try to remember the spiciest story in their biography, others deliberately write simple, plain answers to avoid being picked on. All of them are about to become items on the list of a skillful comedy sommelier.
“International whines,” this is what Marcel calls the randomly selected stories he explores further, which serve as inspiration for improvised jokes. Not a regular crowdwork session, but rather an exploration of all the funny undertones and curious flavours of the audience’s input. Marcel is quick, clever, and delicate. He immediately wins everyone’s trust with his charm. Nobody feels shy anymore; the room is galvanised, filled with a warm, pleasing atmosphere of shared laughter.
But could he be satisfied with just smart improvisation? Of course not the show offers an extensive tasting menu of creativity: witty poems, songs, finessed one-liners, captivating routines, and even a short film displayed at the end. Marcel finds the most elegant way to joke about mundane or even disturbing topics, an Uber driver on a Tinder date, sex on an airplane, school shootings. He fearlessly mocks British politics and the many problems of British society. Told by a quirky French character, these jokes gain an extra layer of comedic relief.
Each detail is well thought out and maintained throughout the entire show: the costume, expressions, voice, posture, and movement. Marcel Lucont is unmistakable and truly unforgettable.
