Nothing defines Iain Anderson’s show better than his title, TRAUMEDY: A Guide to Being a Fabulous Homeless Addict. At 40 years old, Iain has done it all. From working in the corporate world and spiraling into homelessness, Iain became “the leader of the unhoused,” never losing his sense of self that makes him such a great storyteller. Iain is a new comedian — just over a year and a half of performing — who grew up queer in small-town Scotland. Shortly after getting up onstage, he knew his calling was to tell his story.
Now seven years sober, Iain is far removed from the lowest points in his life, which are likely far lower than the average person. But by bravely sharing what he experienced through a lens of humor, we’re able to laugh at situations we could never even imagine for ourselves. Iain is a naturally charismatic guy — attractive, charming, and witty in conversation.
TRAUMEDY feeds off his natural personality as it feels like one friend telling another his story of how he hit rock bottom multiple times before getting to where he is now — happy, healthy, and in love, not just with a partner, but finally, with himself and his life. The jokes themselves still have room to grow, but there are some ridiculously funny moments through Iain’s cheeky delivery and surprising perspective. But despite being billed as a “comedy,” Iain’s show elicited tears in several audience members, so don’t forget your tissues!
TRAUMEDY runs Aug 3-25 (not 7, 14, 21) at PBH’s Free Fringe @ Kafe Kweer. More info can be found on the Edinburgh Fringe website.
